Today I had the privilege of listening to Dr. John Lorenz, Chair of CU's Bioethics Department discuss maternal and fetal rights. A few points:
- In NYS a woman can terminate a pregnancy up to 24 wks (6mo); when does the father have rights?
- What is the point of bringing a baby into this world if the doctors & social workers deem mother incapable to raise the child well? (This was really asked!)
- If the baby needs mother to take meds or restrict behaivor, should the courts force the mother to comply? However, hospitals can't force non-pregnant people into treatment or compliance.
- The more society limits parental choice, the more responsibility society has to take.

The governments )States and Federal) are very interested in the fetus,
then they abandon the child. If you review the policies and practivces
of all the [developed???] countries you will see that the USA is still
in the dark (very) ages when it comes to providing a good environment
for child rearing: parental nutrition, living environment, medical
care, etc. If one is not careful many of these children will be born in
dumps. Why are children and women dumping fetuses, for example? Because
if they do not want the child, the government does not provide a
healthy incentive to bring the child to term then give him/her up for
adoption or other humane services. Same with people with drug problems.
If you walk into a police station and tell them you hav ea crack
addiction and you just used crack they will first arrest and charge you
then the defense lawyer can work out the details. Why not say to these
pepole, you made a mistake or you have a habit; however, the way to
deal with it is to report to the hospital where you will be treated for
the problem and whatever else instead hide and have the child then
pretend it never happened, until you are caught and sent to prison.
There is blame every where. We can VERY EASILY SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.
Iddue is not resources. Issue is common sense and desire to solve the
problems.
